Early Communion at St. Philip the Deacon

by Jo Johnson

St. Philip the Deacon met first in the little House Chapel on Dunkirk. Marion Loges, wife of our first pastor Ralph Loges, explained that the original communion service set used for the sacrament was from Pastor Loges’ home church in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin where he was baptized, confirmed and ordained.  The same church also gave him two candles which were used regularly on the altar.  Wine was served in small individual glasses but only to those who had been confirmed.

During Lent 2011, we are encouraging the St. Philip the Deacon community to reflect on the Sacrament of Holy Communion — recalling early memories, describing memorable celebrations of Communion, or reflecting on how Communion informs daily life. This post is part of that series. We invite your reflections about Communion, as well. If you would like to submit something for this series, please send it to Pastor Cheryl Mathison at cmathison@spdlc.org.
