Lent 2010: Hear

“Music has the power to move a person between different realities: from a broken body into a soaring spirit, from a broken heart into the connection of shared love, from death into the memory and movement of life. Music has the power to touch the heart of a child with God.”
—Dr. Deforia Lane, Music Therapist

In the movie August Rush (if you haven’t seen it, you should!), the main character, August, is an orphan. August is a musical prodigy, and has faith that if he can produce the music that he hears in his head, it will lead him back to his parents. August hears music everywhere—in street noise, in the wind, in the rustle of grass in a field. He is completely enveloped by sound.

Composers or musicians will often talk about something otherworldly about music. Sometimes the combination of the notes, the harmonies, the way the sound surrounds you could only be called Divine. Music can be something both received from God and given back in praise. In fact, someone once wrote that “to make music is to pray twice.”

Question: Have you experienced the Divine through music? What music connects your soul to God?
